Leadership

A Leader is a Servant
So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? –John 13:12

Pastor Tony
Senior Pastor, Tony Clark

The Transformation

After his first year in college, Tony decided to marry his high school sweetheart, Jenise, and join the United States Marine Corps. After boot camp, instead of starting a life with his new bride, Tony received military orders to be stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Going to this foreign land was more than an overseas adventure because it was here that he made a life-changing God commitment. He thrived in this newfound relationship and began learning about the Bible. It was in Okinawa that the Lord revealed to Tony that one day he would become a pastor.

Senior Pastor, Tony Clark
Pastor’s Tony’s Reading List: “Total Forgiveness”Born and raised in the steel town of Gary, Indiana, Tony lived life “his own way” Monday through Saturday. However, Sundays were different because that was the day he would go to church. And even though he attended church, Tony had no idea what it meant to have a relationship with Jesus Christ.

An exceptional student and athlete, after graduation, Tony was offered an academic scholarship to Indiana State University and a baseball scholarship to Southern University in Louisiana. Tony chose academics and attended Indiana State. This decision would change the course of his life forever!

The Call

When Tony returned to the states, he continued in his walk with the Lord and became an assistant pastor with a local church. Still in the Marine Corps and stationed at Camp Pendleton, in San Mateo, Tony had a 70 mile round trip commute. He would use this time to learn more about the Bible by tuning in to Calvary Chapel’s radio station, KWAVE. Over time, Tony grew increasingly interested in the “new” teaching style of Calvary Chapel and began attending Calvary Chapel Vista.

When Tony’s enlistment in the Marine Corps ended, he was asked by Pastor Brian Brodersen to join his pastoral staff. After a few years at Calvary Chapel Vista, Tony began thinking about the idea of pastoring a church. But where would it be? Only God would know!

The Work

Joey Buran, who, at the time pastored Calvary Chapel Hampton Roads, would periodically call Tony to tell him about the ministry opportunities in Virginia. Even though Tony had never been to the East Coast, he decided to visit Virginia. After much prayer, Tony knew for certain that Newport News, Virginia was the place that God would have him to be a pastor.

In September 1994, Tony, Jenise, and their three children, Erin, Tony Jr., and Eric, made the trek from Vista, California to Newport News, Virginia. October 1994 marks the date that Calvary Chapel Newport News was established.

Today, Calvary Chapel Newport News is a multi-cultural fellowship with members from over 30 countries represented. More than 2,500 people call Calvary Chapel Newport News home and are inspired by Tony’s simplistic, yet life-changing teaching style. A sought after Bible teacher, he often travels around the country to preach the Gospel message. His radio program, “The Word Made Plain,” is heard daily by millions.

Though Tony didn’t know it, God directed his life from the very beginning. For example, KWAVE, the radio station that Tony listened to as a young marine during his long commute to work, now airs his weekly messages!

Until He Comes

The desire of Tony’s heart is to see the community of Newport News and the Hampton Roads area transformed by continuing to preach the Good News of Jesus Christ. Tony continues to heed the call by passionately studying God’s Word, prayerfully seeking the Lord’s direction for His church, and vigorously pouring love into the lives of the people God leads his way – persevering until He comes!

Media Director, Jenise Clark
When I was a child, the first scripture I ever learned was Philippians 4:4. “Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.” To date, this verse is still one of my favorites. In fact, when I think about rejoicing, nothing brings me greater joy than to see people make the connection of how important a meaningful relationship with Jesus really is. Serving as Media Director allows me to help people make that connection visually through my graphic design work. Graphics allow me to communicate with the church body by bringing the words of Pastor Tony to life. In addition to being on staff, I also get to sing and rejoice with CCNN’s Praise Team, which, in my opinion, is the BEST praise team in the world!

What an honor and pleasure to be able to serve God every day working in the Children’s Ministry and serving the families of CCNN. God gave me a heart for children at a very young age. I love the way Jesus says, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God.” (Mark 10:14) God has blessed my husband, Michael, and me with 5 lovely daughters. My family is honored to be a part of the ministry at CCNN and pray that we are living out our calling to raise the next generation of Christ followers.

Ministry Oversight & Reaching Around Pastor, Kevin Stiff
My mom has called me an encourager most of my life like Barnabas in Acts 4:36. The Apostles called him “Son of Encouragement” because he was a man passionate about seeing others grow in the grace of God. Like Barnabas, as the Reaching Around Pastor, I am passionate about encouraging the body of Christ at CCNN by doing life together. Through small groups, we grow spiritually, have accountability and establish relationships with other believers. God did not intend for us to do life alone. My wife, Tonnetta, and I served in the Air Force for more than 20 years and witnessed church growth like Acts 2:46-47, where believers simply shared life in teaching, prayer, fellowship, worship and service. “And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.”

I am affectionately known as “Music Mike” for obvious reasons. As Worship Leader and overseer of CCNN’s prayer ministries, I heavily depend on God through my favorite verse, Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will direct your paths.” My wife, Mata, and I are honored to serve God and the people of Calvary Chapel Newport News.

As Executive Support Coordinator, I draw upon my love for connecting people and problem solving. I seek to live out 2 Corinthians 5:20 as the 1st Impressions Ministry Leader and encourage and equip women in Romans 8:37-38 as a Women’s Ministry Leader. I desire to carry out Colossians 1:10 and “walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects,” but most importantly, as the wife to my high school sweetheart, Lou.

I feel like I carry myself as Mr. Humble, and I know for sure that I have “Talk to me” written on my forehead, because I’m always engaged in conversations that seem to start with simple eye contact. I know it’s a gift of listening that has been revealed to me that I want to continue to build on, and I’m always constantly observing how people can be so easily ensnared with the world’s view of life you should act and behave. It always brings me back to Roman 12:2 about not becoming conformed to this world, but being transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. It’s a constant reminder for me to still be “The Salt” in this world and to let my actions reflect onto the Lord.

Youth Pastor (High School), Marcellous Register
From the moment I gave my life to the Lord, I have made it my purpose to reach out to the next generation, teaching the youth what it means to not only know God, but to follow hard after him. As the IGNITE Student Ministry Director, I have the pleasure of fulfilling this purpose by equipping our teens to engage their community, schools, and homes with the matchless name of Jesus and live out their faith. My wife, Carolyn, also serves in Ignite and we have two children. We love being able to live for a cause that has not only temporary, but also eternal value and reward.

I show my love for God and a desire to please him by being a good steward over all duties with which he has entrusted me. I consider it a privilege to use the talents, gifts and skills with which he has blessed me to support our ministry leaders, CCNN staff, and Calvary Chapel Christian Academy staff and parents. Jeremiah 29:11 is my favorite verse. “For I know the plans I have for you.” In addition, I love how God’s plan for me with my husband, Duke, was better than anything I ever dreamed of.

I have always loved the way the Holy Spirit changes us from the inside out. Our walk with Him shows the fruit of our labor. God uses people, places and things to accomplish His will of spreading the Good News, while keeping us humble in service for the Body of Christ. I’m reminded constantly of what Romans 12:3 says, “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.”

From high school and college ministry, to skits and poetry, I have a passion to communicate the truth of Jesus Christ to those without hope. I consider serving as Pastoral Intern while continuing my collegiate studies a great privilege. My wife, Anita, and I have enjoyed learning and laboring alongside the faithful men and women of CCNN since 2008.

I have served in the Army of man, and now God has seen fit to allow me to serve in the Army of the Lord! There is nothing like having a mission and winning souls for Christ and helping children and adults grow in their relationship with Christ. We are at war (spiritual), and we have to be prepared for the daily battles we encounter. My wife, Stacey, of 30 years held down the fort while I went off to war and has been an incredible comfort to me. She has allowed me to focus on the mission. “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:10-11, NKJV)

Tony Clark, Jr. is Calvary Chapel Christian Academy’s Assistant Director, where he oversees the Before and After School Program. Before joining CCCA’s team, Tony was a Special Education Educator with the Newport News public school system for nine years and later became a supervisor with the City of Newport News Parks and Recreation.Impacting the lives of children is Tony’s top priority, as he desires not only to see children challenged educationally, but to also see them mature spiritually in a Christ-centered environment. This, in turn, creates opportunities for them to be positive influences within their community. A favorite verse of Tony’s is Colossians 3:12, which says, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Because of the compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience he shows the students, he is blessed with the unique gift of making strong connections with children and their parents.

Children’s Ministry Preschool Assistant Director, Victoria Gamble & husband, LeRon
I have been privileged to serve in children’s ministry for over 30 years. I am honored to be able to love on the children and families of CCNN. One scripture that serves as a constant inspiration for me is 1 Corinthians 13:1-8. I pray that the way I serve in ministry helps kids to understand more about Jesus’ love for them and that His “love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:8). I thoroughly enjoy pouring the love of God into children, especially through music. My husband, Ronald, and I have raised 4 children, Cache’, Se’ja, Ayse, and LeRon. We have enjoyed being a part of the Calvary family for over 12 years.
